FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the use of very fine needles inserted into specific points on your body.   According to traditional Chinese medicine, these points are located along several pathways throughout the body, and needling them will assist your body in naturally restoring balance.

Is acupuncture safe?

Absolutely.   All acupuncture needles are pre-packaged, sterile, and disposable. There is no risk of infection because used needles are safely disposed in a biohazard container.

Does it hurt?

Most people find acupuncture very relaxing! Acupuncture needles are about the width of a human hair and insertion is usually painless. Occasionally, there may be some tingling, heaviness, or an electric sensation near the needle which subsides very quickly after insertion.

What can I expect during my first visit?

Treatment begins with an in-depth consultation in order to gain a holistic view of your medical history, current conditions and lifestyle. Examining your tongue, checking your pulse, and palpation of acupuncture points are some of the diagnostic techniques to help to determine the pattern at hand. Each visit is personalized to your individual needs and may change as treatments progress.  If needed, other therapies may be incorporated during your treatment including bodywork, cupping, electrical stimulation or the application of heat. First visits will last approximately 1-1.5 hours. We recommend you wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments needed is different for each patient.  More acute conditions will generally respond quickly to acupuncture, and chronic conditions may require more treatments.  After your initial appointment we will create a treatment plan that best suits your personal needs, and as treatments progress we will reevaluate and change your plan accordingly.
